Phil is an accomplished musician who has played musical instruments since childhood, performing in his school band and in a Sea Cadet Bugle and Drum Band in High Wycombe. He studied at the Royal Marines School of Music in 1979 winning the Premier and Centenary Trophies. During his Forces career Phil was drafted to The Band of HM Royal Marines aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia performing at Royal engagements across the globe including, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Panama, Tortola, the Falkland Islands to name but a few.
In total Phil served 22 years in the Royal Marines Band Service during which time he took up the appointment of Drum Major of The RM Bands at Britannia Royal Naval College and Commando Training Centre Royal Marines and was the Drum Major and Instructor at the Royal Marines School of Music, finally leaving the Corps in the rank of Colour Sergeant.
He is currently the first trumpet player in the Royal Naval Volunteer Band based at the Britannia Naval College, Dartmouth which performs at many events in South Devon. He also plays in the brass quintet and in the Big Band. When he’s not playing the trumpet, Phil can often be heard tapping out rhythms on the drums, strumming a guitar or playing the piano!
In his spare time Phil is also a Kayak coach and a Private Pilot.
